Several reasons actually. I have studied environmental science and biology which gave me the theoretical knowledge of our relationship with the earth and our body’s needs. Growing up, I have had very bad acne that no medication could rid me of. After loads of research and self-observation, dairy seemed to be the culprit. So, I switched it out of my diet. At that time, a colleague was vegan and I was curious about the lifestyle. My research led me to see the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and I have never looked back since.
I remember telling a friend “since I’ve turned vegan, it’s like I am walking on air”. I have never felt healthier or more energetic than in the last 4 years. I teach children and let’s be honest: they are a breeding ground of germs! Since turning vegan, I have only ever had one mild cold whereas earlier, I would fall ill more frequently. While veganism is definitely the best diet for humans, it is easy to get lost in vegan junk food which, surprise surprise, is unhealthy too! If you are going vegan for your health as well, you will still need to take care of what you put on your plate.

I was very fortunate to grow up in a culture where vegetables were given the importance they deserve, so switching to a fully plant-based diet was fortunately easy for me. I was not given any grief from my family and friends and in fact, many of them have been moving towards it as well!

Moving to China as a vegan has been an absolute adventure! I have gotten more creative in the kitchen using new ingredients and combinations that earlier would have never crossed my mind. I am trying so many new foods and meeting such fantastic, inspiring people along the way which would not have happened had I not been vegan.
